What actually happens during a mobile detailing appointment?

Alex Miller, Owner and detailerAugust 13, 20265 min read

A mobile detailer arrives at your house at a booked time, works on your car in the driveway for somewhere between two and five hours depending on the package, and walks you around the finished vehicle before leaving. You do not need to be present the whole time — you need the car accessible with room to work around it, and nothing else. Miller Mobile Detailing carries its own water tank and generator, so no spigot and no outlet are required.

That is the whole appointment. Since it is a service most people have never actually watched happen, here is the detailed version, along with the two or three things that genuinely go wrong when nobody mentions them in advance.

What do you need to provide?

A parking space. That is the entire list.

This is worth being specific about, because it is not true of every mobile detailer. Plenty of them run the pressure washer off your outdoor spigot and the vacuum off an exterior outlet, which means they need a house with both, working, and within hose reach. Miller Mobile Detailing carries its own water tank and generator in the van, so nothing comes from your building.

The practical difference shows up in three places:

Apartments and condos
No spigot to use and no outlet in the lot. A self-contained detailer can work the space you park in; one running off the building cannot.
Detailing at work
An office lot or a parking garage has no water at all. Your car sits there eight hours a day anyway, so this is one of the best ways to get it done without giving up a Saturday.
Older houses
Outdoor taps around Sapulpa and Midtown Tulsa are frequently seized or shut off at an interior valve for the winter and never reopened. It stops mattering when the detailer is not using yours.

The one thing that does matter is space around the car — enough to open every door fully and walk the full perimeter. A single-width driveway with a second car behind it is the most common snag, and moving the other vehicle beforehand solves it. If access is genuinely tight, say so when you book rather than on the day.

Do you have to be home?

No, and plenty of people are not. What has to be true is that the car is reachable and unlocked, or that keys are somewhere agreed. Booking a detail for a workday while the car sits in the office lot is one of the most common ways people do it, because the car is stationary for eight hours anyway.

The one part worth being present for, if you can manage it, is the end — the walkaround is where you find out what came out, what did not, and why.

How long does it take?

By package, roughly:

Interior detail
about three and a half hours.
Full detail, inside and out
longer, since the complete exterior is added.
Anything with shampoo
longer again, because the fabric has to be washed, agitated and extracted.

One number worth knowing: Miller Mobile Detailing books one vehicle per appointment rather than stacking cars. The time on the calendar is the time actually spent on your car, not a slot in a queue.

What is the actual order of work?

For a full detail it goes outside-in, which surprises people who assume the reverse.

  1. 1Wheels and tires first. They are the dirtiest part of the car and they get a dedicated cleaner and a brush. Doing them first means the grime and cleaner come off before the paint is washed rather than splashing onto a clean panel.
  2. 2Pre-rinse, then foam. The foam lifts loose grit off the surface so it is not dragged across the paint by the mitt. This is the step that prevents wash-induced swirl marks.
  3. 3Hand wash, panel by panel, with a mitt. Top down, so dirty water runs over unwashed paint rather than clean paint.
  4. 4Hand dry with plush microfiber. Not left to air-dry, which is what produces water spots — especially on a hot day.
  5. 5Interior: vacuum everything. Carpets, mats, seats, under the seats, cargo area.
  6. 6Mats out and scrubbed, often with a drill brush, then returned once dry.
  7. 7Console, cupholders, vents and crevices by hand, then dash, doors and trim cleaned and dressed with a matte finish.
  8. 8Leather and vinyl cleaned and conditioned.
  9. 9All interior glass last, because everything before it throws dust and overspray onto the glass.
  10. 10Walkaround.

What can go wrong?

Honestly, not much — but these are the recurring ones.

Weather. Rain is the obvious one. Extreme heat is the underrated one: above about 90°F with the car in direct sun, soap and rinse water dry on the paint before they can be removed, which produces exactly the spotting the wash was supposed to fix. Summer appointments get scheduled early in the day for that reason.

Condition surprises. Occasionally a car turns out to need substantially more than the package assumes. Miller Mobile Detailing's stated policy is that any additional cost is explained before work begins and nothing starts until it is agreed — which is a very different thing from finding out at the end.

Expectations about what detailing fixes. A detail cleans. It does not repair. Deep scratches through the clear coat, cracked dashboards, torn upholstery, cigarette burns and hail damage are not cleaning problems, and a detailer worth using will say so before the appointment rather than let you be disappointed after it.

How do you book it?

Online, on a real calendar, picking an actual start time rather than a four-hour arrival window. Confirmation arrives by text and email, and then there is a follow-up to confirm the service address.

For anyone in Sapulpa and the closer towns, that has a practical upside: short drives fit into gaps in the schedule, so last-minute openings are genuinely more likely to be usable than they are out at the far edges of the metro.

Prices are published rather than quoted — $175 for the interior detail, $225 inside and out, $275 to $325 with shampoo — so the number you see when you book is the number you were always going to pay.

FAQ

Quick answers

No. The car needs to be accessible with room to work around it, and that is the whole requirement — Miller Mobile Detailing brings its own water and power, so nothing has to be turned on for him. Plenty of customers book a detail for a workday and come back to a finished vehicle. The walkaround at the end is the part worth being there for if you can.

Many do, but Miller Mobile Detailing does not. The van carries a water tank and a generator, so no spigot and no outlet are needed and nothing shows up on your utility bill. It is worth asking any detailer this before booking, because one running off your building cannot work an apartment lot, a condo space or a parking garage.

An interior detail is about three and a half hours; a full detail inside and out takes longer, and adding carpet or seat shampoo longer again. Miller Mobile Detailing books one vehicle per appointment rather than running several at once, so the scheduled time is the time actually spent on your car.

The appointment gets moved. Rain prevents the exterior work, and extreme heat causes its own problem because soap and rinse water dry on hot paint and leave spotting — which is why summer appointments in the Tulsa area get scheduled earlier in the day.
